On October 3, 2008, in the Blue Room of the Assemblée Nationale (seat of Quebec’s governement) in Québec City, Clef des Champs was awarded a Mérite Agricole (agricultural merit) gold medal, 2nd tier, presented by Quebec’s agricultural minister, the Honourable Laurent Lessard. The Ordre national du mérite agricole held its 119th competition in the summer of 2008, organized by the Ministère de l’Agriculture, des Pêcheries et de l’Alimentation du Québec. The purpose of the Ordre national du mérite agricole competition is to acknowledge the skill and hard work Quebec growers put into their businesses, thus encouraging the development of a vibrant industry. When the competition was first held in 1890, Quebec was divided into five territories due to its size. The competition is open to a different territory each year, in five-year cycles. Having accumulated 912 points out of a possible 1 000, Clef des Champs ranked 2nd in its category, only 5 points behind the first prize winner. Despite fierce competition among new organic growers in 2008, Clef des Champs also won the regional Coop fédérée à l’agroenvironnement award for being the most environmentally-friendly agricultural business in its region (the Laurentians), thus contributing to sustainable development on a daily basis.
